IU Surgery Residents Hone Skills In Art Class

Last summer, reporter Sandy Roob sat in on an art class at the Indianapolis Art Center, where Indiana University plastic surgery residents sketched a nude male model.

By putting pen to paper, the residents combined their scientific knowledge of human anatomy with a new appreciation for details. The result: a better connection between their hands and eyes.

"This class is actually helping because it's giving me more appreciation of the fine details," said Dr. Rob Paul, a plastic surgery resident. "When we look especially at the facial aesthetics, its shadowing's and things like that, we notice before, but when we're really trying to draw that, and depict that on a piece of paper, it helps you focus heavily into that area."
