Egypt Gets A Much, Much Lower Price On New Hep C Meds

Sovaldi, a relatively new hepatitis C medication, retails at about $1,000 a pill in the United States. But according to the New York Times, Sovaldi's manufacturer, Gilead Sciences, has been selling it for just $10 a pill to the Egyptian government—which gives it to patients for free.

From the story:

"Do you Americans love Egyptians more than yourselves?” asked Hany Tawfik, 66, a private equity specialist who in 2014 was the first Egyptian to receive sofosbuvir. “Why aren’t you putting pressure on Gilead to sell to you at a reasonable price, too?”

Fair questions.
