While naloxone - a drug that's gaining nationwide visibility for its ability to reverse opioid overdoses - is federally classified as a prescription drug, some states have passed laws that allow pharmacies to sell it without one.

In a recent press release, major drug store chain CVS announced that naloxone is now available without a rescription in its stores in fourteen states:  Arkansas, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin.

In Minnesota, pharmacists are required to offer a brief training before they dispense the drug, as Minnesota Public Radio reports.
