The Workaround was a six-episode podcast and multimedia project that examined the surprising – and sometimes shocking – things Americans do to overcome roadblocks in our health care system.

Reporters Bram Sable-Smith, Christine Herman, Jake Harper, Esther Honig, Emily Forman and Sarah Fentem explored a wide range of issues. They found diabetics who used crowdfunding to pay for insulin, parents who gave up custody of mentally ill children to get them into treatment, and a black market for medications needed to treat opioid addiction. The project included radio stories, videos and a social media campaign.

The Radio Television Digital News Association has honored outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism with the Murrow awards since 1971. More than 720 regional award winners were selected from 4,600 entries.

Regional Murrow winners move on to a national round of judging.
